  1. What motivated you to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired?

I wanted to give back to my community in a meaningful way and be part of something bigger than myself. Volunteering with Millfields Inspired allows me to support children, families, and the wider organization through a variety of roles from helping in the office, organising, and tidying spaces, to directly assisting with activities. Every task, big or small, contributes to making the environment welcoming and supportive, and being able to help in multiple ways is truly rewarding.

  • What has been your most favourite  moment?

It’s hard to pick just one, because every moment of contribution feels special. I love seeing children and teenagers gain confidence and enjoy activities, but I also find joy in supporting the organization behind the scenes, whether it’s organising materials, setting up spaces, or helping things run smoothly. Knowing that my efforts, no matter the role, make a difference is incredibly satisfying.

  • How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to the children/families and schools we support?

Volunteering allows me to provide support in many ways, not just for the children, but for the families, staff, and the organised environment, and the organisation as a whole. By helping with practical tasks, creating and organised environment, and offering encouragement where it’s needed, I hope to make it easier for the school and families to thrive and feel supported. Every contribution, no matter the role, helps strengthen the whole community.

  • What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

I would encourage them to give it a try. Volunteering is rewarding in so many ways, and there are opportunities to contribute in ways that suit your strengths and interests, whether it’s working directly with children, helping with office tasks, or supporting events. Every act of volunteering makes a difference, and you’ll gain the satisfaction of being part of a team that truly cares about the community.

  1. What motivated you to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired?

Through working with Millfields to deliver STEM outreach through my work, I was motivated by the chance to further help young people in the local area broaden their horizons and access opportunities they might not otherwise be exposed to, particularly around the world of work.

  • What has been your most favourite moment?

There are many! My favourite moments have been helping facilitate and supporting a tour of a former nuclear submarine in the Dockyard for local class and also visiting the aquarium behind the scenes – opportunities students wouldn’t have had without Millfields.

  • How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to the children/families and schools we support?

I think it helps build confidence and curiosity, giving children and families a sense of what’s possible, encouraging big ambitions, providing support and exploring opportunities.

  • What would you say to someone thinking  about volunteering with us?

Do it! It’s incredibly rewarding, doesn’t require being an expert, and even small contributions can have a massive impact on people’s lives. There is something for everyone!

  1. What motivated you to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired?

I was motivated to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired because I wanted to give something back to the local community and support children and families who could really benefit from extra encouragement and opportunities. The organisation’s focus on inclusion, creativity, and building confidence really resonated with me, and I liked the idea of being part of something that makes a real, positive difference.

  • What has been your most favourite moment?

I loved taking one of our newly qualified apprentices into a school to enlighten the students about his journey from school and into an apprenticeship with the KierBAM team. I learned just as much as the students did that day about formwork carpentry. Unless these opportunities are shared and explained, many young people simply don’t know they exist. That’s why I believe sessions like this are truly valuable in helping to shape students’ futures and enhance their aspirations.

I also really enjoyed my day volunteering at the Prom Cellar. Seeing the faces of the students securing their prom dresses was a truly magical. It felt really special to be able to play a part in helping them choose their dresses and was touched to see the wonderful donations also made on the day.

  • How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to the children/families and schools we support?

It’s clear that in the areas where Millfields Inspired operates, there is a genuine need for positive role models and meaningful career inspiration. Widening Horizons couldn’t be more appropriately named, as that is exactly what it achieves and what is so greatly needed.

By offering  opportunities, inspiration, and practical guidance, the programme helps children and young people see possibilities they may not have otherwise considered. This support is invaluable in helping them build confidence, raise aspirations, and begin to imagine a wider range of futures for themselves, which ultimately benefits families and schools alike.

  • What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

Get involved! There are so many volunteering opportunities available to suit a wide range of skills and interests, so don’t be put off if you don’t feel confident presenting to children. Volunteering can look very different you might find yourself helping to sell prom dresses and suits at the Prom Cellar, making teas and coffees at an intergenerational event, or even dressing up as a bear at the Teddy Bears Picnic.

Volunteering will quickly become the highlight of your week. It’s a great opportunity to step away from your desk, try something new, and take part in genuinely feel‑good activities that make a real difference. You won’t be disappointed.

  1. What motivated you to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired?

I have been involved with Millfields Inspired since the conception of the Widening Horizons program. I was part of the meeting when the school I worked in was asked whether they would like to be involved. I immediately thought it was a brilliant idea. I supported the program over many years, accompanying children on many valuable, informative and fun visits. In 2019 I was asked to be a trustee of Millfields Inspired and hope my experience of school life has been beneficial. I have since retired and am able to give time volunteering to such worthy cause.

  • What has been your favourite moment so far?

My favourite moments have always been through the eyes of the children. Those moments when a child is so engaged and motivated by opportunities that they didn’t know existed, and then returning to school full of ideas for their future.

  • How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to the children, families, and schools we support?

I hope that my volunteering helps children to be aware of the many career and employment opportunities that are available to them. Many of which they have no knowledge of. As well as the children I hope to help the school and staff of Millfields Inspired deliver these programs. From giving out cake, reading stories, helping run the Prom Cellar or walking with children on their visits, the varied jobs support everyone.

  • What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

Millfields Inspired is a wonderful trust to be involved with. Not just Widening Horizons but Inspire Me and the Intergenerational Projects too. The staff, Trustees and other volunteers are extremely friendly, appreciative and supporting. You would be helping to inspire young people from a deprived area of Plymouth towards a better future. Alao it is very enjoyable, and we often have cake!

Knowing that the money was going to a good cause and also the fact that I wanted to put myself out there so my confidence would grow.

  • What has been your most favourite moment.

Seeing girls happy leaving with dresses that they were happy with for their big day.

  • How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to children/families and schools we support?

I feel my volunteering has helped students and families realise they don’t need to feel stressed about financial issues and they can have a nice prom night that they wanted as some people decide not to go to prom due to expense and also I feel the environment at prom cellar I’d very comforting. Also my volunteering makes a difference for the schools to go on trips that they can remember for a lifetime and learn all the different jobs they can do and how their dreams can be achieved regardless of background or external advantages.

What motivated you to start volunteering with Millfields Inspired?

I wanted to find a local charity where I could build a lasting relationship, explore a variety of volunteering opportunities, and directly see the impact of my support. After reaching out to a few charities, I met with Keely (the Development Manager) – she has such passion for the work Millfields Inspired do, and I was hooked. They create opportunities for young people in under-served areas to widen their aspirations, improve their life chances, and bring people in the community together – these are things I also care deeply about.

What has been your most favourite moment?

My favourite moments are going on trips with primary school children to visit local employers and organisations. These visits show them the incredible industries right on their doorstep and open their eyes to future career paths. It is awesome to watch the children actively engage, ask curious questions, and leave the sessions buzzing with excitement. Knowing they walk away feeling that their future is full of limitless opportunities is incredibly fulfilling.

How do you feel your volunteering makes a difference to the children/families and schools we support?

Millfields Inspired achieves extraordinary things and makes a massive impact for such a small team, but they rely on hands-on support to turn their vision into reality. When volunteering on school trips, I act as an extra pair of eyes, ears, and hands to ensure these vital activities run smoothly and safely. My time spent supporting the Prom Cellar also helps guarantee that this wonderful service remains available for local young people. Ultimately, by stepping in to help, I enable the charity to expand its reach, deliver more community activities, and make a meaningful difference in even more young lives.

What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering with us?

If you are thinking about it, absolutely go for it! The team at Millfields Inspired is incredibly welcoming, supportive, and appreciative, ensuring you feel valued from day one. They do a fantastic job of matching your unique skills and available time with the right opportunities, so it never feels overwhelming. There is no greater feeling than watching a young person’s face light up with new confidence, and you will get back just as much joy and fulfilment as you give.
